Long John Silver’s has rebuilt its digital guest experience on a stack of four specialist vendors,
with Plein Air responsible for the web and mobile app layer.
The four pieces
Each vendor owns a distinct layer rather than overlapping:
- Plein Air — web and mobile app
- Attentive — CRM and SMS messaging
- Bikky — customer data platform
- Sparkfly — offer management, loyalty, digital wallet and point-of-sale middleware
The first phase went live in April, across more than 300 corporate stores plus participating
franchisees. Jason Antony, Director of Digital Marketing at Long John Silver’s, and Plein Air
co-CEO Jason Abelkop were both quoted in the announcement, along with executives from each partner.
Why the framing matters
The interesting detail is not the rollout but the billing. Plein Air appears here as a technology
vendor named beside Attentive, Bikky and Sparkfly — not as an advertising agency that also builds
apps. For a company that started in marketing, being listed as infrastructure is a meaningful
reclassification, and one the Big Colony launch a year earlier was clearly aimed at.
It also says something about how brands of this size now buy. Rather than one agency of record
owning the digital relationship end to end, the work is split into layers with defined seams:
identity and data in one place, messaging in another, offers in a third, and the customer-facing
surface in a fourth. That only works if the seams are real, which is why the point-of-sale
middleware in Sparkfly’s column is doing more work than it looks.
The harder part
Franchise participation is the quiet difficulty in any rollout like this. A corporate store can be
told to adopt a new offer engine; a franchisee has to be persuaded, and the ones who opt out create
exactly the inconsistency a loyalty programme cannot tolerate. “Participating franchisees” is doing
real work in that sentence.
